Free Resources

In addition to the resources that McCartney Library licenses on behalf of Geneva College students, faculty and staff, there are many more sources of information freely available from government agencies or through public libraries.  These databases, which are available to those without an active Geneva ID, may be helpful to those doing college-level research.

The State of Pennsylvania licenses academic and general interest resources that are available to state residents who obtain an e-card by registering with their name, email, and Pennsylvania zip code: PA Power Library e-Resources 

Government information and indexes

Many government departments compile indexes and reference sheets, and they make this information publicly available.

• Agricola -- Produced by the National Agricultural Library, encompasses all aspects of agriculture, animal sciences, farming, and environmental sciences
• Census website -- Dedicated to providing facts, figures, and data sets about America's people, places, and economy
• ERIC -- Online library of education research and information, sponsored by the Institute of Education Sciences of the U.S. Department of Education
• National Criminal Justice Reference Service -- Federally funded resource offering justice and drug-related information to support research, policy, and program development worldwide
• PTSDpubs -- Index of articles and information about post-traumatic stress disorder from the Department of Veterans Affairs
• PubMed -- Database with 30 million+ citations and some full-text content for biomedical literature

Open Access Resources

• DOAB -- The Directory of Open Access Books provides the online full text of books it lists, many of them from scholarly, university presses.
• DOAJ -- The Directory of Open Access Journals lists journals that provide all of their articles online, without charge and provides a search engine for their articles
• EBSCO Essentials – Search and filter results in this database of open access articles, as well as other sources that can be requested from your local public library through interlibrary loan
• European Views of the Americas (EBSCOhost) -- free archive of indexed publications and primary sources related to the Americas and written in Europe before 1750 
• GreenFile (EBSCOhost) -- Open access records from scholarly, government, and general interest sources regarding all aspects of our relationship to the environment
• LISTA (EBSCOhost) -- Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts provides free resources on libraries and information management
• OpenDissertations (EBSCOhost)-- Provides open access to over 1.2 million electronic theses and dissertations from around the world
• Teacher Reference Center (EBSCOhost) -- Research database for teachers with more than 230 scholarly journals covering topics from current pedagogical research to curriculum development
